1. Name of Organization

The Northern Ontario Friends of Animal Society formally changed it's name to "The Northern Ontario Animal Welfare Society" (N.O.A.W.S.), effective February 4, 1998.

2. Purpose of Organization

The purposes of "The Northern Ontario Animal Welfare Society" are as follows:

To reduce pet overpopulation in Northern Ontario Communities by providing a spay/neuter subsidy program to low income families, individuals and senior citizens
To educate the public regarding their pets and:
- the importance of spaying/neutering
- proper care and training
- the prevention of abuse
To provide financial assistance to low income families and individuals and to senior citizens, as it pertains to food, medical care and assistance for their pets
To care for, neuter or spay, and find permanent homes for homeless animals

3. Non-profit Clause

The "Northern Ontario Animal Welfare Society" is a non-profit organization, which will carry on without purpose of gain for its members, and any profits or other accretions to the organization shall be used solely to promote its objectives, that are:

Providing a spay/neuter subsidy program to low income families and individuals and to senior citizens
Promoting, through public education, the importance of spaying/neutering, proper care and training, and abuse/neglect prevention in pets
Providing financial assistance to low income families and individuals, and to senior citizens, as it pertains to food, medical care and assistance for their pets
Caring for, neutering/spaying and finding good, permanent homes for homeless animals

4. Structure of Organization ("Executive")

The structure of the "Northern Ontario Animal Welfare Society" is as follows:

5. Replacement of Executive

Executive members will be chosen at every second "annual meeting", to be held at the beginning of the fiscal year. Nominations will be made by members of the organization, and elections will be by secret ballot vote system.

6. Date of Effectiveness

This document is effective February 4, 1998.

STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES

Revision 1 - February 4, 1998

The Northern Ontario Animal Welfare Society (NOAWS) is a non-profit organization coordinated solely by volunteers whose goal it is to help reduce pet overpopulation and promote animal welfare in Northern Ontario by:

Being part of a coordinated effort with a local veterinarian that helps low income families and individuals and senior citizens spay or neuter their pets;

Educating the public on animal welfare, care and training of pets, and promoting spaying or neutering their pets;

Providing financial assistance to low income families and individuals, and to senior citizens, as it pertains to food, medical care and assistance for their pets;

Caring for homeless, abused, neglected and abandoned animals by providing shelter, food and medical care until such time as permanent homes can be found.

A brief outline of the Northern Ontario Animal Welfare past and present activities is provided below:

1. Fundraising:

Funds for the above listed activities are raised locally by way of:
- Private donations from members of the public and of the society
- Fundraising activities such as a spring "Pet Fair", Pony Rides at Fall Fairs, Garage Sales, Bake and Craft Sales, Lotteries, etc
- Coin boxes at commercial enterprises
- Small corporate donations

2. Education Programs:

A Quarterly Newsletter, filled with tips, articles, pets available for adoption, Society Activities, etc is circulated, free of charge, to the public
Society members visit schools and other local organizations to inform and respond to questions
Society members attend community events and functions to promote our cause (eg. Booths at Carnivals, fairs, etc)

3. Animal Welfare:

The Society actively participates in helping locate lost animals
Allegations of animal abuse from concerned community members are forwarded to the Ontario Provincial Police for investigation.

4. Fostering and Adoptions:

The Society, together with caring community members, fosters abandoned, abused and homeless animals until permanent homes are found. (Note: Donations from community businesses and individuals enable the society to supply food and supplies for foster animals)
The society, with the help of a local veterinarian, spays or neuters, as well as vaccinates and provides medical care to homeless animals in its care under the fostering program, prior to placing the animal up for adoption.
In adoption, the animals are placed with responsible pet owners who offer a life-long commitment to their new companions, and who agree to neuter or spay the adopted pet.
The Society, with the use of an Adoption Officer, assists in matching up pets and prospective owners by maintaining a "Pet Registry", for members of the public who wish to place their animals up for adoption, or are looking for a family pet.

5. Spay/Neuter and Financial Assistance Programs:

In order to help control pet overpopulation in the community, and when funds are available, the NOAWS offers spay/neuter subsidies or loans to low income families and individuals.
When funds are available, the society also provides financial assistance (in the form of loans or subsidies) to low income families and individuals, and to senior citizens, as it pertains to food, medical care and shelter for their pets.
